Cinder [The Lunar Chronicles] Book 1 {Audiobook Review}

My Thoughts on the Story

This story is of a futuristic world with cyborgs, androids, humans, and moon people. That fact made me get past my hesitation to buy it. I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear yet another Cinderella story, even though that is one of my favorite fairy tale stories. I am extremely glad that I made the purchase. It has a similar theme with Cinderella and it is clear that the author was thinking of Cinderella when she wrote this story, but it is much more than the typical Disney story we all know. I didn’t read the whole summary to avoid spoilers so I wasn’t completely sure what to expect. I just read the full summary before starting this post and I am glad I didn’t beforehand. Sometimes those summaries ruin the suspense and surprise, which are my favorite parts of reading/listening to a story.

About nine chapters into the book, I first thought that some things were too easy to guess; it almost felt too predictable. Then I decided that perhaps some of those details were purposely made obvious by the author and maybe the excitement was going to be how those secrets were revealed to the characters.

I saw a review on Audible that said they were surprised at how much they enjoyed the story. I can understand where they are coming from. You’re thinking it’s just another Cinderella story with a slight twist from the story we know, but then you’re delightfully surprised at the adventure it takes you on that is not at all like the story you grew up on. And it’s a good story, not just a lame attempt to change up the story. I’ll admit that there were times when I wanted to roll my eyes at the similarities to other Cinderella-like stories, but I got past that. I definitely became attached to some characters. One of my favorite was an android named Iko.

The world that the author built up is an interesting one. There is a small learning curve as with any new world but I didn’t feel overwhelmed with extra data thrown at me so I can understand how this futuristic world works.

My Thoughts on the Narrator

Rebecca Soler did a great job narrating this book. I can’t think of any complaints. She was good with the lead female character as well as the annoying step family voices. She was also good with male voices of different ages. Sometimes the lead female and male characters ran together during quick and heated conversations but I hear that with many narrators. I’ve just started listening to Book 2 of this series and I think I may start looking up other books Rebecca narrates.

I definitely recommend this book, especially to those who like sci-fi, futuristic, or dystopian type stories.
